THE STORY BEHIND THE LABEL

Carhartt: from the railroad to the street
How Hamilton Carhartt built a Detroit workwear company, why the label crossed into music and street culture, and what we look for in preloved Carhartt.
A Detroit workwear business founded in 1889
Hamilton Carhartt founded Hamilton Carhartt & Company in Detroit in 1889. Carhartt’s own history says the business began making overalls in a small loft with two sewing machines and a half-horsepower electric motor.
The early products were not created as fashion pieces. After initial difficulties, Hamilton spoke directly with railroad workers and used what he learned to develop bib overalls around their working needs. By 1910, the company had expanded to mills and sewing facilities across several American cities and into Canada and the UK.
Workwear that developed over generations
Carhartt’s archive dates advertising for its Chore Coat to 1917. The company later introduced outdoor lines in the early 1930s, supplied garments during both world wars, and launched the heavy-duty Active Jac in 1975.
These developments help explain the label’s identity: practical garments, recognisable shapes and a long association with physical work. They do not mean every Carhartt item has the same fabric, durability or intended use, so the individual garment still needs to be judged on its label, construction and condition.
How workwear entered music and street culture
Carhartt’s official history says the brand gained attention beyond blue-collar trades during the 1980s and 1990s as people in hip-hop began wearing it. The separate Carhartt Work In Progress story adds more detail: Edwin Faeh began introducing Carhartt products to Europe in 1989, established WIP in 1994, and developed collections connected with rap, graffiti, skateboarding and techno culture.
Carhartt and Carhartt WIP are related but not interchangeable. WIP adapts core American workwear ideas into its own collections. For shoppers, that distinction matters when comparing labels, fits and prices.
Our view is that Carhartt’s broader appeal comes from this overlap: functional details and sturdy-looking fabrics can work on a job, while relaxed cuts and worn finishes also suit casual outfits. The documented cultural links show visibility, but they do not guarantee that any particular item is rare or collectible.
Why we stock preloved Carhartt
Carhartt fits our shop because utility trousers, jeans and jackets can be useful wardrobe pieces. We would style work trousers with a plain T-shirt, sweatshirt or overshirt; a worn-in finish can be part of the look rather than something that needs to appear brand new. Those are our editorial suggestions, not claims about a garment’s technical performance.
Preloved value depends on the exact piece. We consider the price alongside the fabric, size, visible wear and how much practical use remains. A good label is not a reason to hide paint, fading, fraying or repairs, so our photographs and condition notes should be treated as part of the description.
Carhartt itself now promotes repair and resale programmes as ways to keep clothing in use longer. That supports the principle behind preloved workwear, although Branded Preloved Clothing Gloucester is an independent retailer and has no commercial relationship with Carhartt or Carhartt WIP.
Choose by condition, fit and intended use
Check the photographed size label and compare the waist, inside leg and rise with trousers you already wear. Look closely at knees, hems, pocket edges, the seat and inner thighs, especially on garments that have already been used for work. Ask for any missing measurement before ordering.
Workwear and protective equipment are not the same thing. A used garment with an FR or safety marking must not be assumed to retain current certification or protective performance. Our preloved items are sold as clothing unless the listing explicitly provides current, verified safety information; buyers must assess suitability for specialist work.
The items shown below use actual-item photographs and current availability checks. Our main Carhartt collection and separate Revived Workwear section may change as one-off pieces sell, so check the individual listing for today’s price, condition and delivery options. Local Gloucester collection is available by appointment.
