How do I know whether second-hand jeans will fit?

Start with a pair you already wear comfortably. Fasten them, lay them flat without stretching and compare the waistband width, front rise and inside leg with the listing photographs. Double a laid-flat waist measurement for an approximate circumference; check whether a listing shows inches or centimetres.

The label size is a starting point. A higher rise, narrower thigh or different stretch blend can change how jeans feel even when the waist label matches. Compare similar fabrics and decide how much room you want when sitting and moving. Our size guide explains the measurement points.

If a measurement or fabric label is missing, ask us before buying and quote the BP stock code. We can check the exact garment rather than guess from the brand.

What should I look for in the photographs?

Check the seat, inner thighs, knees, hems and pocket edges for wear. Look at the fly, waistband, belt loops and any photographed labels. Read the condition and seller’s note alongside the images; a pale patch may be a fade, while a hole or repair needs closer attention.

Distressing may be part of a design or may come from previous wear. Do not assume which it is from the brand name alone. Ask about anything unclear, including tears, repairs or missing labels. Colours can also look slightly different on different screens.

Which brand and style should I choose?

Choose the shape and details you will actually wear. A Levi’s label does not mean every pair is a 501; True Religion stitching does not tell you the rise or leg shape; Wrangler has produced different fits and ranges. Use the recorded model, photographs and measurements for the individual pair.

Our styling suggestion: start with a leg shape you already enjoy and use the wash or stitching to change the look. A dark pair can work with a shirt, while a faded or boldly stitched pair can suit a casual top. These are outfit ideas, not promises about fit or a garment’s age.

How do I judge value and the final cost?

Compare the current asking price with condition, fit and how often you expect to wear the pair. A recognisable label does not automatically make an item a bargain. Avoid judging value from an unverified original retail price.
