THE STORY BEHIND THE LABEL

Juicy Couture: velour tracksuits and everyday glamour

By Branded Preloved Clothing Gloucester ·

Meet Juicy Couture’s founders, explore the tracksuit’s place in pop culture, and discover why we stock preloved velour, hoodies and sparkling separates.

Two friends, a fitted T-shirt and Los Angeles beginnings

Before the tracksuit became the best-known part of the story, Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor wanted to make a T-shirt they loved. Penguin Random House’s account of their memoir, The Glitter Plan, describes the pair meeting while working in a Los Angeles boutique, then developing comfortable, fitted T-shirts from Nash-Taylor’s Hollywood apartment with $200.

Juicy Couture’s official UK history dates the brand to 1995. Published accounts differ: Vogue’s retrospective gives 1997 and locates its beginnings in Pacoima, California. We use the brand’s own 1995 establishment date here, while acknowledging that difference rather than treating the chronology as settled.

The founders’ memoir also describes taking samples into shops and sending Madonna a tracksuit embroidered with her nickname. Their approach connected a very personal idea of comfortable clothing with people who could bring it to a much wider audience.

How the tracksuit became a pop-culture favourite

The tracksuit offered an immediately recognisable combination: soft-looking velour, a coordinated top and trousers, and decorative branding. Juicy Couture’s official history still puts that garment at the centre of its identity. The look made casual dressing conspicuous, with texture and embellishment doing much of the work.

Paris Hilton’s own recollection gives a useful first-hand view of its appeal. In a Vogue video released on 18 December 2019, she describes discovering Juicy through a gift from a friend representing the brand, wearing it for travel and evenings out, and packing it for The Simple Life. Her account links the tracksuit to both everyday comfort and the reality-television culture of the early 2000s.

There was a fashion-world crossover too: Vogue’s April 2003 feature took the founders to the Paris couture shows. These documented appearances explain part of Juicy’s visibility; they do not establish how many people wear it today or make every second-hand piece a collector’s item.

New ownership, new audiences and a place for resale

Authentic Brands Group records acquiring Juicy Couture in 2013. Its later account of the brand describes collaborations, renewed interest in its early-2000s look and the Heritage collection’s return to matching tracksuits and crown-logo tops. Those are examples of the brand revisiting recognisable designs, rather than leaving them in an archive.

On 1 March 2023, Authentic announced REJUICED, a peer-to-peer resale programme developed with Recurate. That launch is a concrete sign that second-hand clothing became part of the brand’s own strategy. It is a historical example, not a statement about the programme’s current operation, and our shop has no connection with it.

Our editorial view is that Juicy’s appeal rests on a combination shoppers can still enjoy: relaxed shapes, a playful logo and enough sparkle to make an ordinary outfit feel considered. Nostalgia may attract someone to the label, but the garment still needs to suit their wardrobe.

Why we stock preloved Juicy Couture

Our catalogue includes black velour joggers, a zip hoodie, rhinestone tank tops and cargo trousers. These give us several ways to offer the brand’s style: a soft casual layer, a decorative top or practical separate trousers. The individual listings distinguish pre-owned pieces from items recorded as new with tags.

For an easy outfit, we would pair a velour hoodie with plain jeans or wear a rhinestone top under a simple jacket. Joggers can work with a plain T-shirt, letting their texture and detailing stand out. These are our styling suggestions; separately listed tops and bottoms should not be assumed to form an original matching set.

For us, preloved value comes from fit, condition, price and likely use. A piece that works with clothing you already own can earn its place through repeated wear. We do not promise a fixed saving against a new equivalent, and a familiar logo alone does not determine value.

What to check before choosing velour or rhinestones

Look closely at the actual-item photographs, especially the seat, knees, cuffs and hems. Ask about any patch that appears flattened, faded or marked. Check the decoration for missing stones, and the zip, waistband and seams for visible wear. Read the stated condition alongside the pictures.

Compare the chest width and body length of a hoodie or top with one you already wear comfortably. For trousers, compare waist, rise and inside leg where supplied. A size letter is only a starting point; ask us for a missing measurement and quote the BP stock code.

Follow the care label on the individual garment. Our catalogue does not establish the fibre composition or manufacture date of every Juicy piece, so neither a velour finish nor an older-looking logo should be used to guess those details.

The shopping section below shows actual garments only when they pass the site’s current availability and photograph checks.
