THE STORY BEHIND THE LABEL

Lee: from Kansas workwear to everyday denim

By Branded Preloved Clothing Gloucester ·

How H.D. Lee’s 1889 mercantile business became a denim name, why Lee crossed into popular culture, and what we look for in preloved Lee jeans.

An 1889 business that did not begin with jeans

Henry David Lee and four business partners established the H.D. Lee Mercantile Company in Kansas in 1889. Lee’s official timeline records that the original business supplied groceries and other everyday goods to shops across the American West—it was not yet a clothing manufacturer.

The direction changed in 1912, when the company opened a garment factory in Salina, Kansas, to make overalls and work jackets. In 1913 it developed the one-piece Union-All after an automobile mechanic asked for a jacket and trousers to be joined together to protect the clothes underneath.

From Union-Alls to the 101

Lee’s early developments were responses to practical work. In 1925, after consulting working cowboys and rodeo riders, the company introduced its 101 Cowboy Waist Overalls. Its archive says scratch-proof stitching replaced exposed copper rivets on the back pockets to protect saddles.

Further milestones followed. Lee used a zip fastening in workwear in 1927, introduced its Lazy S pocket stitching on Lee Riders in 1946, and launched Lady Lee Riders in 1947. These dates describe developments in the company’s ranges; they do not mean every later Lee garment has the same construction or fabric.

How workwear entered popular culture

Lee’s archive places denim’s shift from working clothing to youth fashion in the 1950s, when jeans became strongly associated with film stars and American youth. The company’s UK heritage page specifically links Lee with actors James Dean and Steve McQueen.

The label stayed visible as tastes changed: Lee records bell-bottoms and painter jackets on college campuses in 1970, and a Lee denim jacket worn by Bruce Springsteen on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1984. Parent company Kontoor Brands also describes Lee being worn by musicians, models and actors during the 1980s and 1990s.

Those are documented examples of cultural reach. Our editorial view is that Lee’s lasting appeal comes from how easily denim moves between practical clothing and personal style—not from assuming that an ordinary used pair is rare, vintage or connected to a celebrity.

Why we stock preloved Lee

Lee suits our Gloucester shop because jeans and cropped denim can do useful work in an everyday wardrobe. A straight pair can be worn with a T-shirt, sweatshirt or casual shirt; capri jeans offer a lighter option for warmer days. Different washes and colours can change the look without requiring a completely different outfit.

Our current catalogue contains Lee pieces across different rises, lengths, fabrics and recorded conditions. That variety is one reason we make room for the brand, but the label is only a starting point. Our styling suggestions are opinions, and no single cut will suit every shopper.

For us, preloved value means considering the actual asking price, measurements, fabric, visible wear and likely use. A pair that fits well and works with clothes you already own may offer better practical value than one bought for its badge alone. We do not claim a fixed saving against a new equivalent.

Choose the pair rather than the name

Check the rise and fit description as well as the labelled size. Lee has made straight, skinny, classic-fit, easy-fit, cropped and capri styles, among others. Compare the waist, rise and inside leg with a pair that already fits you, and ask for any missing measurement before ordering.

Read the photographed fibre label because some pairs contain stretch fibres while others may be mostly cotton. Inspect the waistband, pocket edges, inner thighs, knees and hems, and pay particular attention to disclosed marks on pale or white denim. Recorded wear should be part of the price decision, not hidden by the brand name.
