THE STORY BEHIND THE LABEL
Levi’s: from work trousers to an everyday favourite
Discover how Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis helped shape jeans, why Levi’s appeals to us, and how to choose a preloved pair.
A business founded in 1853
Levi Strauss opened a wholesale dry goods business in San Francisco in 1853. The company began by supplying everyday goods, rather than as the fashion label we recognise today. Its connection with practical working clothes would help shape the next chapter.
The tailor who helped change jeans
Tailor Jacob Davis had a way to reinforce trousers with metal rivets at points that took strain. He approached Strauss to help patent and manufacture the idea. On 20 May 1873, the two received their patent for riveted clothing. That is the milestone Levi Strauss & Co. celebrates as the birth of its blue jeans.
The useful distinction is that the business began in 1853; the riveted-jeans patent followed in 1873. The story belongs to both Strauss and Davis.
How workwear became part of popular culture
Levi’s own archive describes the 501 moving beyond workwear into youth culture in the 1950s and the peace movements of the 1960s and 1970s. A practical garment had become a way to express personal style.
Our view is that the continuing appeal is easy to understand: denim works with a plain T-shirt, a hoodie or a smarter shirt. A familiar label and a choice of cuts make it a useful starting point for a wardrobe, while different washes let people make the look their own.
Why we stock preloved Levi’s
At Branded Preloved Clothing Gloucester, we want familiar brands to be accessible to shoppers watching their budget. Levi’s fits that approach because jeans can be worn in so many different outfits. Preloved pairs also offer individual fades and finishes that some shoppers prefer.
The label is only part of the decision. We want you to judge the actual pair: its price, measurements, fabric and recorded condition. A famous name does not make every used garment the right purchase, and we do not promise a particular saving against a new equivalent.
Choose the pair, not just the name
Read the model number and size on the listing rather than assuming every Levi’s pair is a 501. Check waist and inside-leg measurements against jeans you already wear comfortably. If a measurement is missing, ask before ordering.
Look through the actual-item photographs, including hems, pockets and areas of wear. Stock is one-off and changes as pieces sell, so use the Levi’s collection below to check today’s sizes and prices. We are an independent preloved retailer, with UK delivery and Gloucester collection by appointment.
