Tommy Hilfiger: from a small-town shop to pop culture

Before the label: People’s Place in 1969

Tommy Hilfiger’s fashion career began in Elmira, New York, where he opened People’s Place in 1969. According to his official biography, he wanted to bring the styles he saw on musicians to his hometown. A local clothing shop came before the international label.

In 1979, Hilfiger moved to New York City to pursue fashion design. There he met businessman Mohan Murjani, whose support helped him launch his namesake brand in 1985 with a menswear collection. Hilfiger was the founding designer; Murjani played an important backing role.

1985: a fresh take on familiar clothes

The first collection updated established pieces such as button-down shirts and chinos through their fit and details. An early Times Square billboard, devised with advertising creative George Lois, put the new designer’s name alongside leading American names.

The business subsequently expanded beyond its original menswear range. PVH acquired Tommy Hilfiger in 2010, a milestone recorded in the brand’s official biography.

How music and sport broadened the audience

Tommy Hilfiger’s heritage account credits hip-hop artists with bringing the label into streetwear during the 1990s. That connection helps explain why the brand can mean both neat, collegiate-inspired dressing and a more relaxed, logo-led look.

A later example is the Tommy Jeans and NBA collection announced by PVH on 25 October 2022. It brought basketball team graphics to pieces including hoodies, sweatshirts and varsity jackets. This is a documented connection with sporting culture, rather than a claim that every Tommy garment is sports kit.

Our reading is that this mix gives the label its broad appeal: a checked shirt and a bold sweatshirt let people approach the same brand in different ways. Music and sports collaborations provide evidence of cultural visibility; they do not tell us that an individual preloved piece is rare or collectible.
