THE STORY BEHIND THE LABEL
Wrangler: rodeo roots, everyday denim
From a Greensboro overall business to cowboy jeans and country music: discover Wrangler’s origins and our reasons for choosing preloved denim.
Before Wrangler: two brothers and working clothes
Wrangler’s story starts before its familiar name. In 1904, C.C. Hudson and his brother Homer established the Hudson Overall Company in Greensboro, North Carolina. The business became Blue Bell Overall Company in 1919. Blue Bell acquired the Wrangler name when it bought Casey Jones Company in 1943.
1947: jeans shaped by rodeo
The Wrangler western-jeans brand launched in 1947 under Blue Bell, with designs by tailor Rodeo Ben. Wrangler’s archive names Jim Shoulders, Bill Linderman and Freckles Brown among the rodeo riders who tested the jeans. The Hudson brothers founded the earlier business; Rodeo Ben helped shape the later product.
That distinction matters when reading brand histories: 1904 describes the company’s roots, while 1947 marks Wrangler’s western-jeans launch.
Beyond the rodeo arena
Wrangler’s timeline records its European launch in 1962 and its clothing for the 1992 film Pure Country, starring George Strait. These milestones show how a working-clothes identity reached new markets and entertainment audiences.
A more recent example is the first Wrangler x Lainey Wilson collection, announced on 25 September 2024 by parent company Kontoor Brands. It brought the country singer’s style into flared jeans, jackets and Western-inspired shirts. This is a documented link between clothing and music culture, rather than a claim that every shopper follows a celebrity.
Our reading is that Wrangler’s appeal combines an identifiable Western heritage with clothing people can adapt to their own lives. Those collaborations demonstrate cultural visibility; they do not, on their own, prove sales success or tell us which fit you will prefer.
Why we make room for preloved Wrangler
For our Gloucester shop, the attraction is practical: jeans can anchor several outfits without requiring a wardrobe built around a trend. We like a straight or relaxed pair with a plain T-shirt and trainers, or with a casual shirt and boots. These are our styling suggestions, not promises about every Wrangler garment.
Preloved clothing lets us offer individual washes, cuts and conditions at the price shown on each listing. Value comes from finding a pair you will actually wear: the fit, fabric, condition and asking price matter more than the badge alone. We do not assume a fixed saving against a new pair or treat ordinary used jeans as collectible vintage.
How to choose your pair
Start with the actual listing. Wrangler has made different cuts and ranges, so a Wrangler label does not automatically mean Cowboy Cut or a particular model. Read any photographed model and fabric labels, then compare waist, inside leg and rise with jeans that fit you comfortably. Ask for a missing measurement before buying.
Check the photographs around the seat, inner thighs, pocket edges and hems, and read the recorded condition. Think about whether you want rigid cotton or stretch and how much room you need through the thigh. A familiar waist size alone cannot answer those questions.
